Does AI Create Bias in Hiring? It’s Complicated, But It Can Also Help
One of the most common questions we get at Jobz is whether AI and video introduce bias into the hiring process. It’s a fair concern, but the truth is more positive than you’d expect.
At Jobz, we’ve designed our platform to reduce bias, not reinforce it. Our AI doesn’t rely on who you know or what your name sounds like. Instead, it surfaces candidates based on skills and career goals. This opens doors for people who might not be part of the “right” network or who aren’t actively job hunting but have what it takes to succeed.
Research backs this up. According to LinkedIn’s Future of Recruiting report, 43% of talent professionals cite bias reduction as a top benefit of AI in hiring. And a 2025 report from Warden AI found that 85% of AI systems met accepted fairness thresholds, showing that many systems are already more consistent than people give them credit for.
Once candidates are surfaced, Jobz presents hiring managers with a ranked list focused on skills, not geography, last name, or resume formatting. This approach reflects a broader trend: a 2022 report from the Burning Glass Institute showed that skill-based hiring is on the rise, increasing by 63% over five years. Companies making this shift have reported better employee retention and stronger performance.
That said, we don’t pretend AI solves everything. Human bias can still influence final interviews and decisions. That’s why Jobz is able to offer teams visibility into who gets invited to interview, helping organizations spot patterns and target coaching where needed. As Warden AI also noted, AI can deliver up to 45% fairer outcomes for women and racial minorities than traditional, human-led processes, but only when it's implemented thoughtfully.
We also hear concerns that AI platforms like ours might overlook candidates who are less polished or more nervous on camera. But in today's workplace, especially in customer-facing roles, showing up in person, and often on video, is just a part of the job. And unlike one-sided interview tools, Jobz gives every candidate a chance to meet their future manager through video as well. That way, the assessment flows both ways.
We know this isn’t a panacea. But when done right, AI can remove barriers that humans often put up. It helps the right people get noticed, supports more equitable decision-making, and gives hiring managers a chance to discover talent from anywhere, regardless of resume polish or zip code.
